Columbian Bilateral Upper Extremity Amputee

Here is yet another assistance story  from the Barr Foundation.

This is a remarkable story of a bilateral upper extremity amputee from Columbia who came to this country for help in obtaining prosthetic arms. He was born with no arms and is a self taught professional artist.

32 year old John Jario Rueda is a renowned artist whom since at a young age, has learned to feed and dress himself, as well as paint with his feet and mouth.

In October, the Barr Foundation received a telephone call from the local Spanish television station TELEMUNDO in Miami about John and his needs for artificial arms.

The Barr Foundation enlisted the help of one of their sponsors Garrison Prosthetic Clinic in North Miami Beach, Florida and Where Hope Meets Donor Member Hosmer Dorrance Corporation in Campbell,  California.

On December 2, 2003 John received his final fitting and best Christmas present ever, a brand new set of functional arms.  John is unsure if he will re-teach himself how to paint with his new hands, but he is glad he can at least use them for other functions, like carrying his paint & brushes and feeding himself !!

 Talk about  need!

Barr Foundation has assisted over 800 amputees domestically and abroad with prosthetic rehabilitation, whom otherwise could not afford it.

Thank you,   Hosmer Dorrance and Kevin Garrison.

Donations for this and other efforts are being accepted by the Barr Foundation and receipted as tax deductible donations.
