Book: Whole Again (by Lee Whipple)

Fifty year-old Bill Barr is a wealthy real estate developer and Illinois legislator. In 1970, a bomb, planted under the hood of his Cadillac by someone who doesn't like his non-discriminatory housing policies and advocacy for the mentally ill,  blows his leg off as he tries to start the car.

As the subtitle suggests, the rest of the book is the story of Bill's and his son Tony's indefatigable, heart wrenching, but inspirational quest for prostheses that works for them - ones that they can wear without pain.

His son Tony also ironically losses most of his foot 2 years later in 1972 .Together, the father and son amputee team vow to help all amputees receive proper amputation surgery, known as the Ertl Procedure, and obtain affordable and qualified prosthetic care.

The breath taking story has been featured and has received rave reviews on major television networks, including The Today Show, The 700 Club, and popular national book reviews as Readers' Digest, Publishers Weekly, and personal endorsement by Ed McMahon (the Tonight Show) as a "inspiration for us all and for everyone to read."

Video-DVD:   A Mile In My Shoe
A documentary of Patrick Vest, an Ertl amputee as a result of an accidental shooting.
Note: Two Parrot Productions has donated a limited number of videos to the Barr Foundation.  This was done to support the Barr Foundation in their amputee assistance programs.

"A Mile in My Shoe depicts the remarkable reality of what is possible following an Ertl amputation.
Patrick's tenacious spirit upon the foundation of a healthy and pain-free limb has left him unstoppable"
- Tony Barr, The Barr Foundation

"This movie creates the understanding that life does not come to a halt following an amputation.
As a follow-up to severe physical trauma, I would envision this film as a highly effective tool
to help people cope with their fears and trepidations."
- Christine Adams, L.C.S.W.

"When you are facing an amputation and don't know much about it, that's very scary.
The more education we can give them...I believe that helps stem some of the anxiety."
- Dennis Luse, C.P.

"Anyone in Patrick's position is faced with the following decision:
either to wallow in self-pity, or toughen up and play the game with the cards you are dealt.
This movie is about taking your life back into your own hands..."
-Sergeant John Porter, U.S.M.C., Retired
